Macular degeneration, which is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a condition in which the macula slowly deteriorates due to age or other chronic conditions. How do I know if I have macular degeneration?

A comprehensive eye exam that includes looking at the back of your eyes will help determine the causes of your vision changes and if they are the result of macular degeneration. In general, AMD causes no physical symptoms other than a slow loss of your central vision. If you want to test your vision for AMD, you can look at a piece of grid paper. If the line appears wavy or distorted, you may have AMD.

 

What are the types of macular degeneration?

There are two types of macular degeneration. The first type is called dry AMD. At this stage, there may or may not be vision loss, but yellow deposits on the macula are visible.?

The second type is called wet AMD. At this stage, the yellow deposits are larger. The individual is experiencing vision changes and there is evidence of new blood vessel formation and bulging and leaking from those blood vessels.

 

What are the risk factors for developing macular degeneration?

Age is the primary risk factor. Individuals over the age of 60 have higher instances of AMD than any other age group. Additional risk factors include being overweight and not exercising, having a family history of AMD, smoking and having high blood pressure and/or diabetes.

 

What are my treatment options?

If you have Dry AMD, monitoring is generally recommended. Our optometrist may also prescribe certain nutritional supplements that may slow the progression of the disease. If you have Wet AMD, your treatment options will depend on the severity of the condition but may include medications to stop the formation of new blood vessels, laser treatments to stop leaking and/or eye surgery to remove new blood vessels.
