Position Overview
The Optometric Technician plays a critical role in supporting Optometrists by conducting pre-testing for annual eye exams and medical eye appointments. This role involves performing enhanced diagnostic testing to assist doctors in monitoring and treating ocular disease, documenting thorough medical histories, and ensuring efficient patient flow. Additionally, the Optometric Technician educates patients on contact lens care, promotes sales, and provides training on proper usage. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment while delivering exceptional patient care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide outstanding customer service during all patient interactions, both in-person and via phone.
- Maintain a professional, courteous, and empathetic attitude in all internal (team members) and external (patients) interactions.
- Greet patients warmly, ensure a welcoming experience, and thank them upon departure.
- Prioritize efficiency and urgency in managing patient time and the doctor’s schedule.
- Conduct thorough and timely patient workups, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Operate and maintain pre-testing equipment, including:
- Manual and auto-lensometers
- Autorefractor/Keratometer
- Retinal camera, Visual Field, OCT
- Phoropter, LipiScan, and other diagnostic tools
- Follow standard operating procedures and scripting for diagnostic tests.
- Ensure proper sanitization of all examination equipment, including tonometer tips.
- Set or reset phoropter settings per doctor’s instructions.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of ocular anatomy, diseases, symptoms, and medications.
- Understand and apply insurance benefit plans to contact lens sales.
- Accurately process and manage contact lens orders, including:
- Entering orders into Point-of-Sale (POS) and manufacturer systems
- Ordering, stocking, and dispensing contact lenses and supplies
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and company policies regarding patient information.
- Identify and recommend improvements in sales, service, and operational efficiency.
- Assist with general office duties, cleaning, and maintaining a well-organized work environment.
- Flexibility to work at multiple office locations based on company needs.
Supervision
- Reports to: Office General Manager.
- Training & Performance Evaluation:
- Weekly or bi-weekly training provided via group conference calls.
- Real-time performance feedback and annual performance reviews.
- Monthly evaluation based on sales goals and service metrics.
- Additional 1:1 supervision available upon request or as required.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Availability to work weekends and overtime as needed.
- Willingness to gain industry knowledge and participate in training.
- Initiative-driven, with a commitment to achieving practice goals.
- Team-oriented and patient-focused approach.
- Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with employees at all levels.
- Proficiency with computers, data entry, and electronic prescription management.
- Minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute.
- Reliable transportation and flexibility to work at different office locations with minimal notice.
- Willingness to be cross-trained in other office duties to enhance patient service.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment with multiple conversations and background noise.
- Physical requirements:
- Lift up to 25 lbs.
- Bend, reach overhead, and sit for up to 4 hours at a time.
- Stand for up to 6 hours throughout the day.
- Simultaneously type and operate phone systems.
- Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions, correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write professional and concise correspondence.
- Strong verbal communication skills to effectively present information to patients, clients, and team members.
- Commitment to confidentiality, discretion, and HIPAA compliance at all times.
Preferred
- 1-3 years of experience as an Optometric Technician.
- Experience in contact lens fitting.
