Position Overview

The Optical Sales Consultant (Optician) is responsible for assisting patients with the selection, fitting, and adjustment of eyewear based on optical prescriptions. This role ensures patients receive high-quality service, accurate prescription fulfillment, and proper eyewear adjustments. The Optical Sales Consultant (Optician) also verifies benefits, processes orders, and maintains compliance with industry standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service during all patient interactions, both in person and over the phone.
  • Maintain a professional, friendly, and empathetic attitude in all interactions with patients and colleagues.
  • Assist patients in selecting eyewear by ensuring proper fit through facial measurements and necessary adjustments.
  • Accurately interpret prescriptions and explain lens options to patients.
  • Educate patients on proper eyewear care and maintenance.
  • Enter prescription and sales information into the system and manage related clerical tasks.
  • Verify insurance benefits and apply them correctly to patient prescriptions.
  • Dispense and adjust eyewear according to prescription specifications.
  • Inspect eyewear for accuracy and compliance with ANSI Z80 standards.
  • Address patient concerns and provide solutions to ensure satisfaction.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations when handling patient information.
  • Perform minor repairs, adjustments, and maintenance of eyewear as needed.
  • Maintain inventory, merchandise displays, and ensure the optical floor is organized.
  • Assist with exam work-up, check-in, and check-out as needed.
  • Collaborate with lab personnel for prescription and product fulfillment.
  • Recommend improvements to sales and service processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Supervision

  • Reports to: Office General Manager
  • Feedback & Training:
    • Ongoing in-the-moment feedback.
    • Annual performance reviews and monthly sales goal assessments.
    • Additional supervision available upon request.

Qualifications & Skills

 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including entering prescriptions and processing orders.
  • Typing speed of at least 25 words per minute.
  • Ability to travel up to 50 miles as needed.
  • Availability to work Saturdays and occasional overtime.
  • Flexibility to work at any company location to ensure office coverage.
  • Ability to work in a busy environment with multiple conversations and background noise.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., bend, reach overhead, and sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Previous experience as an Optical Dispenser (Optician).
  • Contact lens fitting experience.
  • American Board of Opticianry (ABO) certification.
