If LASIK is not for you, but you’re tired of wearing contacts and glasses, consider our REVS (Refractive Epithelial Vision Shaping) program. REVS is designed to provide people with a gentle, non-surgical, reversible method of vision correction that occurs overnight while you sleep. This process is done with Orthokeratology or Ortho-k, and you might hear it called by that name. REVS isn’t something many people have heard about, but we love offering our patients a way out of glasses and contacts without surgery. Read on to learn more.
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-k, is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses (retainers) that you wear overnight while sleeping. While you are counting sheep, the retainers are gently reshaping the epithelium (top layer of our five-layer cornea), so when you wake up and take the retainer out, your vision is 20/20 all day long! Ortho-k can be used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), astigmatism, farsightedness (hyperopia), and presbyopia. It has been shown in studies to slow the progression of childhood nearsightedness (myopia); this process is referred to as myopia control.
REVS, or Refractive Epithelial Vision Shaping, is exclusively The Eye Institute’s Ortho-k program, which is designed to make the process as easy as possible for our patients. Our program provides our patients with unlimited access to our trained staff and state-of-the-art equipment for as long as they wish to use our program. Schedule a REVS consultation to learn more.
How long does the REVS effect last?
After wearing the retainer for eight hours, most people experience clear, 20/20 vision for 12-24 hours before needing to wear the retainer again. We recommend people wear the retainer every night to ensure the clearest vision possible at all times of the day. Even if you forget to wear your retainers overnight, just put them in! Your vision with the retainers on will always be 20/20!
Who is a good candidate for REVS?
The best way to find out if you’re a candidate is to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors. Most people with mild to moderate myopia are good candidates for REVS. The epithelial reshaping effect is temporary, which means there is little risk in the process. You can discontinue wearing the retainers at any time, provided you are willing to start wearing your glasses or contacts again when your myopia returns.
REVS is perfect for children and young adults who want to be glasses-free but are too young for LASIK or are not good candidates for refractive surgery for other reasons (e.g., dry eyes). People who participate in contact sports or work in dusty environments that can pose problems for contact lens wear are also good candidates.
The Eye Institute optometrist will begin by measuring the curvatures of your corneas using an instrument called a corneal topographer. This process is painless and takes about a minute to produce a topographical map of your eye surface.
Our team will make a custom retainer is for your eyes using the corneal topography and your prescription. Your eye doctor will assess the fit and make adjustments if needed. You will go home and sleep in the retainer that night.
The first night you may have some awareness of the lenses in your eyes until you fall asleep. With time, the lenses typically become more comfortable immediately upon insertion. The very next morning, while still wearing the retainer, you will visit our office for an evaluation. We may then make additional adjustments.
Once the fit is perfect, you will begin to wear of the retainer every night. You will follow up with us in three months to assess the retainer’s fit and your progress. If all is perfect, you will be free to enjoy your freer lifestyle! Remember with our REVS program, you have unlimited access to follow-up visits. If at any time you feel something is not right with your REVS progress, schedule an appointment at no additional cost.
