Refractive Epithelial Vision Shaping (R.E.V.S.)

Our REVS program is designed to provide our patients with a gentle,
non-surgical, reversible method of vision correction that occurs over night
while you sleep in one of our REVS retainers. This process is done with
Orthokeratology or Ortho-k.

1) What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology or Ortho-k is the fitting of specially designed gas
permeable contact lenses (retainers) that you wear overnight while
sleeping. While you are counting sheep, the retainers are gently reshaping
the epithelium (top layer of our 5 layer cornea) so when you wake up and
take the retainer out, your vision is 20/20 all day long! Ortho-k can be
used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), astigmatism, farsightedness
(hyperopia), and presbyopia. It has been shown in studies to slow the
progression of childhood nearsightedness (myopia), this process is referred
to as myopia control.

2) What is REVS?

REVS or Refractive Epithelial Vision Shaping, is exclusively The Eye
Institutes Ortho-k program designed to make the process as easy as possible
for our patients. Our program provides our patients with unlimited access
to our trained staff and state of the art equipment for as long as they
wish to use our program. Call and schedule a REVS consultation to learn
more.

3) How long does the REVS effect last?

After wearing the retainer for 8 hours, most people experience clear, 20/20
vision for 12-24 hours before needing to wear the retainer again. It is
our recommendation, however, to wear the retainer every night in order to
assure the clearest vision possible at all times of the day. Even if you
forget to wear your retainers, just put them in! Your vision with the
retainers on will always be 20/20!

4) Who is a good candidate for REVS?

The best way to find out if you're a candidate is to schedule a
consultation with one of our doctors. Most people with mild to moderate
myopia are good candidates for REVS. Because the epithelial reshaping
effect is temporary, little risk is involved. You can discontinue wearing
the retainers at any time, provided you are willing to start wearing your
glasses or contacts again when your myopia returns!

Children and young adults who want to be glasses-free but are too young for
LASIK or are not good candidates for refractive surgery for other reasons
(i.e. dry eyes) often are good candidates for REVS. People who participate
in contact sports or work in dusty environments that can pose problems for
contact lens wear also can be good candidates.

5) What to expect when you begin REVS:

The optometrist will begin by measuring the curvatures of your corneas
using an instrument called a corneal topographer. This process is painless
and takes about a minute to produce a topographical map of your eye
surface.

Using the corneal topography and your prescription, a custom retainer is
made just for your eyes. The fit of the retainer is assessed by your
doctor and any adjustments are made.

You will go home and sleep in the retainer that night. The first night you
may have some awareness of the lenses on your eyes until you fall asleep.
With time, the lenses typically become more comfortable immediately upon
insertion. The very next morning, while still wearing the retainer, you
will be seen in office for an evaluation of your progress. If necessary,
additional adjustments are made to your retainer.

Once the fit is perfect, you will begin your wear of the retainer every
night. You will follow up with us in 3 months and your fit and progress is
assessed. If all is perfect, you will be free to enjoy your new
glasses/contacts free life style! Remember with our REVS program, our
patients have unlimited access to follow ups and state of the art
equipment. If at any time you feel something is not right with your REVS
progress, you are able to schedule an appointment at no additional cost!

Testimonial

Family of 4 that recently moved to the area and we are so thankful to have found such a wonderful office!! One of the hardest things when relocating is finding new doctors, but this was an easy one. The staff and Dr.'s are absolutely wonderful. From the very first phone call to the last check out, everyone in the office went above and beyond to make sure that our care and needs were being met. We have 2 younger children and they loved their office visit. We were able to get appointments right away and all of us were seen at the same time, such a stress taken off our shoulders with that one!! Thank you again to such an amazing office, so very thankful we found you!!!
