Pediatric Eye Exams with our Knightdale and Seaboard Station Eye Doctors

We often use the phrase "through the eyes of a child" to describe a uniquely fresh, clear, balanced view of the world. But just as adult eyes are prone to problems, so can a child experience barriers to that ideal eyesight -- barriers that can actually affect long-term visual development. That's why pediatric eye exams are so important, and why we're so happy to provide them here at The Eye Institute.

Why Young Eyes Need Evaluation

If you could remember the first few months of your life, those images would all be pretty much a blur. That's because a newborn's eyes and brain must develop the skills and coordination necessary to make a clear vision a reality. This process usually takes about 6 months, but any problems or complications that development can greatly impede young eyes. for instance, a refractive error or an alignment problem can cause differences in image quality from one to the other. This can then cause the brain to discount the information from one of the eyes (amblyopia), reducing depth perception. These issues can cause serious vision development delays that can impair school performance or even get misdiagnosed as learning disorders.

Scheduling Your Child's Eye Exams

We recommend 3 major pediatric eye exams for pre-school kids. The first exam, at 6 months, lets us check for functional problems, eye diseases, and other basic issues that might require correction. The second exam, at 3 years, allows for a more detailed and interactive evaluation, thanks to the fact that we can now communicate with your child. The third exam should occur before your child enters school; this exam gives us a chance to diagnose refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. We can then prescribe eyeglasses to correct your child's vision for easier, more fatigue-free reading, writing and studying.

Your child's need for eye exams doesn't end after the transition to kindergarten. School-age kids should continue to have a comprehensive eye and vision exams every two years -- or every year if there's a problem that requires monitoring and correction, such as a corrective lens prescription that may need regular updating. When your myopic (nearsighted child) becomes old enough to wear contact lenses, we may recommend orthokeratology or ortho-k lenses. These lenses, which temporarily re-contour the corneas overnight for clear daytime eyesight, also have the ability to slow myopia progression in children. Since most myopia progression occurs during these years, ortho-k could, therefore, help optimize your child's vision for life.

Family of 4 that recently moved to the area and we are so thankful to have found such a wonderful office!! One of the hardest things when relocating is finding new doctors, but this was an easy one. The staff and Dr.'s are absolutely wonderful. From the very first phone call to the last check out, everyone in the office went above and beyond to make sure that our care and needs were being met. We have 2 younger children and they loved their office visit. We were able to get appointments right away and all of us were seen at the same time, such a stress taken off our shoulders with that one!! Thank you again to such an amazing office, so very thankful we found you!!!
